I'll have to admit I was never much of a reader growing up. I am sad to think of all the wonderful books I missed out on as a child, especially when I see the joy it brings to my children and the way it sparks their imaginations. But you can't go anywhere looking back so I am pressing forward and trying to make up lost time by reading to my kiddos and enjoying it along the way. I also try to fit in a bit of reading on my own, always non-fiction.
Here are some books currently in our book bin:
The John MacArthur Study Bible
I have been borrowing this from Dean each morning. We are Johnny Mac fans and have been known to fall sleep listening to his sermons via ipod. I am trying to really delve down into the Word and don't mind someone else with a mind for the things of Christ helping me along. Focusing more on Quality than Quantity. Would love to know if he has a children's version.
Healthy Cooking For Your Kids by Sarah Banberry
This book isn't what I would call healthy, but very good effort is made to introduce kids to a variety of foods.
I am trying this one out soon.
CHICKEN AND APPLE BITES
1 peeled apple, grated
2 boneless, skinless ground chicken breasts
onion salt (calls for 1/2 red onion)
1 T minced fresh parsley
1 C whole wheat bread crumbs
1 T chicken stock
whole wheat flour for coating
oil for pan frying
Mix, cook over med heat 5-8 minutes until golden brown. Remove and drain. Serve hot or cold.
The Baby Book by Dr. Sears
It's amazing what you can forget between children. This is my goto book for the bambino.
My Father's World by David and Marie Hazel
While this is technically not a book but a catalog, I do spend a fair amount of time perusing it. With school just around the corner I am eager to get our curriculum and begin anew. Jake and Brooklyn will both be "Exploring Countries and Cultures" this year.
Juicing, Fasting and Detoxing For Life by Cherie Calbom, MS
Let me preface this by saying I could do without somethings within, but the overall content is good.
I have a a renewed interest in juicing and eating healthy upon viewing a documentary recommended by a friend entitled Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead. While I am not fat, sick or nearly dead - I have accumulated a fair amount of the ugly three letter word with pregnancy, suffer from sickness from time to time and being sleep deprived question how alive I really am, it was good for me.
Here is a wonderful recipe for Orange/Apple juice. If you love Orange Julius' this is for you. Frothy, sweet and tangy. You could even blend in coconut milk for a tropical twist.
2 large Fuji Apples
4 small navel oranges
Thimble Summer by Elizabeth Enright
This was a part of the Sonlight 4 reading list and is a Newberry award winner.
Horrible Harry and The Green Slime by Suzy Kline
While I could do without Horrible Harry and his antics, the boys especially enjoy these books. We rotate reading from this and a chapter book each night.
Jake is currently reading Jack London's The Call of the Wild
Brooklyn is reading Pollyanna from the Classic Starts Series
