NASCAR-Not so much for me

We were recently offered a "quick family fun weekend trip".   How could we refuse-right?  We didn't find out about the trip until the week of and then didn't know the destination until just a day or so before.  Well, the fun trip was a NASCAR race in Dallas- The Samsung 500.  I have to admit, I was a bit disappointed, especially given the weekend forecast- Rain, Rain and more Rain.   But we were going to make the most of it.  We prepared for the road trip with the big kids and made plans to leave Honey T with his Grammy.  I have nearly as much fun planning - whether it be a trip or a party, as I do the actual event.  It rained on us the entire way down but we were hopeful  the skies would clear.  This would probably be a good time to insert this disclaimer:
Please do not be offended by my lack of interest in your sport, if you are a NASCAR fan-it is not for everyone and I mean no harm.  And to before perfectly fair-we didn't actually see the race so we missed out on a  big part of the total experience.
I'll admit I have little knowledge on the workings of NASCAR.  I don't understand the whole team and point system- how one man can benefit by letting another win.  But a great family friendly movie was built on the "sport"- no not Talladega Nights...CARS, so hey!
We were anxious to see what the whole NASCAR experience was like, for we had never witnessed it first hand, only via the tube.  The exit lane was backed up for 2 miles and that should have been some indication of the frenzy that lie ahead.  I'll admit that the crowd seemed a bit subdued and well probably bummed (to our benefit) because with the current weather conditions the race wasn't looking very promising.   We pulled into the muddy soup pit parking lot and prepared for the worst best.  I was also prepared for a cart to pick us up and take us to the gate, well that never happened.  I walked -in the rain-with a happy heart as I watched the mud sling onto the backs of my children's pants, thinking as only a mother would about the shoes and the muddy mess I would clean upon our return home.  Okay I was better now that we were on pavement and under cover.  We found our seats, which were naturally just out from under the covered area, and then proceeded to get a bite to eat from one of the vendors.  Pizza got the vote.  I don't know why I was surprised at the $8.00 price of a mini pizza, but I was.  I told myself, "It's okay, enjoy the experience-and enjoy your pizza".  The four of us shared two mini's at $16.00 and the bottled water I had in my bag was FREE (as we couldn't stomach paying for drinks too) and went on.  Not sure exactly how long we were there but  we enjoyed some people watching, got wet and made a few observations:
1. NASCAR is a cross between the fair and a football pre-game (not going as far as to say a
    football game just pre-game)
2. NASCAR events are not appropriate for children
3. We will not be back unless we have tickets which include a Suite or accomodations are
     included.
4. People have an intrinsic need to be fanatical about something or someone -
     I'll let that be Jesus.
5.  Events where ice chests full of alcoholic beverages, a dance floor on the big screen and
children are present do not mix.
As I proof read my post I feel I may sound a bit unappreciative or negative, given the circumstances that is true to a certain degree, but overall we did make the most of it and had fun as a family.  I was however never so happy to be back in my dry, clean vehicle heading North on I-35 and got even happier as I sat down to a nice early dinner at Alfredo's.
Did I mention that the skies never cleared and the race never happened that day.  NASCAR is a big deal to a large group of people and I am certain many were highly disappointed.  Especially the mother who spent $300 on tickets for her son's 13th BD for the race to be postponed, bum-mer.  I'll stick to football from the convenience of my home.
